The 30-second answer

At 30 to 40 feet you have the locker depth to run a proper gypsy, so the real question is vertical or horizontal. After that it comes down to whether your ground tackle needs 150 kg of continuous pull or 207 kg.

Size on working load, not boat length

Boat length gets you into the right bracket. It does not finish the job, because a 40 ft catamaran with an all-chain rode and a 40 ft sportfisher on rope are not asking the same thing of the winch.

Lewmar’s rule is that a windlass should be rated to at least four times the weight of your total ground tackle. Work it for a typical 35-footer on a 20 kg Delta and 200 ft of 8 mm DIN 766 chain, which weighs 1.4 kg per metre:

The VR850 carries 992 lb, so it covers that by about seven percent. Thin. Add fifty feet of chain or a bigger anchor next season and you are over the line, which is why a fully chained 35-footer is usually happier on the VR1250 or the HR1600 at 1,369 lb. Swap half the chain for rope and the 850 stops being marginal.

Two different numbers, both called three times

Watch this, because it catches people out. The sizing rule above is about your ground tackle. Separately, Muir derives every published max-pull figure as exactly three times that model’s working load. It is calculated, never measured. The two have nothing to do with each other.

So when you compare models, compare working loads. That is the figure the winch will actually hold while the chain comes up.

Working load and max pull from Muir’s engineering data. Motor figures are nominal; each model peaks higher on a short burst. Free-fall versions of the drums (DFF 12 at $2,886.59, DFF 15 at $3,678.15) share their power model’s specs.

Vertical, horizontal or drum

Three formats suit boats this size, and the deciding factor is almost always the anchor locker.

Fall is the drop from the underside of the gypsy to the top of the piled chain. Measure it before you choose a format, because it rules one of them out for a lot of boats.

Vertical (Muir Storm VR and VRC)

The motor and gearbox sit below deck; only the gypsy shows above, plus a capstan on the VRC models.

  • The chain wraps roughly 180 degrees around the gypsy, so grip is better than a horizontal.
  • Clean, low-profile foredeck.
  • Takes the rode from a wide range of angles, and can serve twin bow rollers.
  • Handles a rope and chain combination on one gypsy.

The cost is depth. A vertical wants 16 in (406 mm) of fall below the gypsy, the motor lives in a damp locker, and installation is the more involved of the two.

Horizontal (Muir HR and Cougar)

Motor and gearbox sit above deck, so the whole unit is visible and easy to service.

  • Needs only 12 in (300 mm) of fall, which is what saves the job on a shallow-locker boat.
  • Easiest format to install and to service, because nothing is buried.
  • The Cougar includes Muir’s manual override for hauling by hand.

In exchange the chain turns only about 90 degrees over the gypsy, so grip is lower. It occupies deck space, it is exposed to weather and feet, and it has to be lined up accurately with the bow roller or the chain will not lead cleanly onto the gypsy.

Drum winch (Muir DW and DFF)

A drum winch has no gypsy. The whole rope-and-chain rode winds onto the drum itself, which is why it needs no locker fall at all.

  • No chain-matched gypsy to get right, because there is no gypsy.
  • Stows a long rope rode compactly.
  • Good on powerboats and anywhere the locker is shallow or awkward.

The trade-off is that the rode has to spool evenly, which wants a guide roller and some attention early on. It is a rope-plus-chain-leader system, so it does not suit an all-chain setup, and the drum takes up its own space on the bow. At this size the DW 12 and DW 15 are the relevant models, and the DeepSea FF240 sits below them at $940.

Best for a 30 ft boat

Vertical: the Storm VR850 at $1,952.25. It works at 331 lb and is rated to 36 ft, so a 30-footer sits well inside it. Add the capstan with the VRC850 if you want a warping drum for lines.

Horizontal: the HR950 Lynx at $1,776.50 is the value pick and actually works slightly harder than the VR850, at 340 lb. The HR1200 Cougar at $2,638.91 buys the Cougar build and manual override, though it is rated only to 33 ft, so if your boat sits at the top of the bracket go to the 1600 instead.

Best for a 40 ft boat

Vertical: the Storm VR1250 at $2,339.85. 456 lb working load, 1,369 lb max, rated to 43 ft, and it recovers at 30 m/min, the quickest unit in this guide. The VRC1250 adds the capstan for $101.65 more.

Horizontal: the HR1600 Cougar at $3,014.75, or the stainless HR1600 at $2,969.62. Identical working load to the VR1250, so you are choosing on locker depth and access rather than strength.

Note the price gap. The horizontal costs about $675 more than the vertical for the same pull. You are paying for the shallow-locker fit and the easy service access, which on the right boat is worth every dollar and on the wrong boat is money spent for nothing.

Three things that decide whether it works

1. The gypsy has to match your chain

Chain size alone is not enough. The standard matters too. Metric DIN 766 and US G4 high-test are close in size but differ in pitch, and a gypsy cut for one will skip on the other. Tell us which chain you own when you order and the matching gypsy ships with the winch.

2. The windlass is not a cleat

Once the anchor is set, the load belongs on a chain stopper or a snubber. A gearbox is built to lift, not to hold a boat against a swell overnight. This matters more at 40 ft than at 20, because the loads are bigger.

3. Cable size, not just breaker size

At these currents the cable run is what limits you. Undersized cable drops voltage, the motor pulls harder to compensate, and it runs hot. Size the cable to the round-trip run length, not to the breaker rating.
