Windlass FAQs: straight answers on sizing, chain, shipping and warranty

Choosing, buying and installing a windlass raises the same questions again and again, so we've answered the 24 windlass FAQs we hear most. They come from an authorised Muir dealer in Melbourne that ships worldwide, and they reflect the Muir ranges we actually sell and our real shipping and return terms.

Windlass FAQs: sizing and selection

The model is the decision everything else depends on. The windlass FAQs in this section cover the fundamentals; for a specific boat, send us the details and we'll confirm the fit.

Start with three numbers: boat length and displacement, anchor weight, and the weight of your rode (chain plus rope). A common rule of thumb is a maximum pull of at least three times the combined weight of anchor and rode. Each Muir product page lists the recommended boat-length range, maximum pull and chain sizes; if you anchor in deep water or strong tide, size up. Send us those numbers and we’ll confirm the model.

A vertical windlass (Muir Storm VR and VRC) puts the motor and gearbox below deck, so only the gypsy sits above it. It needs less deck space and grips the chain over 180 degrees of the gypsy, but it needs enough fall (usually at least 300 mm from the deck underside to the top of the chain pile) and access below deck.

A horizontal windlass (Muir HR and HC) keeps everything in one housing above deck, which suits shallow chain lockers or boats with no under-deck access. Both come in 12 V and 24 V.

A windlass pulls chain (or rope and chain) over a gypsy and drops it into a locker below deck. A drum winch stores the whole rode on a drum above deck, so it suits trailer boats and any vessel without a chain locker; the Muir DW and DFF series come packaged with matched rope-chain kits. A capstan (Muir VC) is a vertical drum with no gypsy, used with rope only for mooring and warping lines or rope-only anchoring on smaller boats.

VR is the standard Storm vertical windlass with a rope-chain gypsy. VRC adds a capstan drum above the gypsy for mooring lines or a second rope rode; motor, gearbox and pull rating match the equivalent VR. FF means free fall: the VFF600 and the DFF drum winches let you release the clutch and drop the anchor under its own weight, faster than powering it down and popular with anglers who anchor many times a day.

Match the windlass to the DC system feeding the bow. Most trailer boats and smaller cruisers run 12 V; larger cruisers and commercial vessels are often 24 V. For the same power a 24 V motor draws roughly half the current, so it tolerates smaller cables and a longer run. Voltage is selected on each product page; check the battery bank you’ll be wiring to before you order.

Windlass FAQs: chain, rope and gypsy fit

More windlass FAQs come down to the gypsy-to-chain match than anything else. Get it right and the rest is straightforward.

The gypsy is machined for one chain size and link standard, so the chain must match exactly. Muir gypsies cover metric short-link chain from 6 mm to 13 mm (DIN 766 and ISO 4565); each product page lists the sizes for that model. If your boat already carries chain, measure the link diameter and pitch (inside length of one link), note any markings, and tell us before you order so we can confirm the gypsy.

It can, but it has to be specified. Imperial chain in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch (G4 or High Test, and BBB) has a different pitch from metric short-link chain, and a gypsy cut for one will skip or jam on the other. Tell us the size and grade you’re running (usually stamped on the links) and we’ll confirm the correct gypsy option. We ship to North America regularly, so this is routine.

Yes. We stock windlass and drum-winch rope-chain kits sized to the Muir gypsies and drums we sell, plus galvanised short-link chain. Ordering the kit with the windlass is the simplest way to avoid a mismatch, because we check the two against each other before dispatch. Chain is heavy, so bulky orders may need a freight quote; we’ll contact you first if that applies.

Yes. A Muir rope-chain gypsy grips both chain and a spliced rope tail, so an all-chain rode of the correct size runs through it without trouble. The reverse is the problem: a chain-only gypsy has no rope groove and won’t handle rope. If you plan to run all chain, mention it when you order; it changes the fall you need in the locker and, on larger boats, whether to step up a size.

Windlass FAQs: ordering and pricing

What you're buying, who you're buying it from, and how to pay. These are the windlass FAQs we answer most often by email.

Yes. Windlass Central is an authorized dealer for Muir Engineering, the Tasmanian manufacturer of the Storm vertical range, HR and HC horizontal windlasses, VC capstans and DW drum winches. Every unit ships in Muir factory packaging with the manufacturer’s warranty, and the spare parts we sell (motors, solenoids, switches and handles) are genuine Muir components.

Two reasons. Price: every product on windlasscentral.com is listed 5% below the matching item on our own eBay store. Support: you’re dealing directly with a specialist dealer that sells nothing but anchoring equipment, so sizing advice, gypsy checks and warranty claims are handled by people who know the product, not a marketplace inbox.

Prices are shown in US dollars. Checkout is processed by Stripe, which accepts major credit and debit cards, and we also accept bank transfer through Wise. Card details are handled entirely by Stripe and never stored on our servers. Any tax that applies to your destination is shown at checkout, so the total you see is the total you pay.

Yes, as long as it hasn’t been dispatched. Email hello@windlasscentral.com or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll change the address, swap a voltage or gypsy option, or cancel the order. Confirmed orders leave Melbourne within 2–4 business days, so contact us early. Once a parcel is with the carrier, changes fall under the returns process below.

Windlass FAQs: shipping and delivery

Everything ships from Melbourne, Australia. These windlass FAQs cover what that means for cost, timing and customs.

Yes. We ship worldwide from Melbourne; the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Europe, the Pacific and South-East Asia are regular destinations. Shipping is calculated at checkout by destination and order value, and the current rate table is on the Shipping and Returns page. Not sure we deliver to your address? Contact us before ordering.

Free shipping applies to windlasses, drum winches and capstans on orders over US$300. Accessories, chain, anchors and spare parts ship at the flat rates shown at checkout (from $9.99 within Australia, from $29.99 to the USA, Canada and the rest of the world) because their size and weight vary so widely. Bulky items such as anchor chain may need a freight quote; we’ll contact you before dispatch if so.

Confirmed orders are dispatched within 2–4 business days, subject to stock. Most deliveries then arrive within 7–15 business days depending on destination and customs clearance. Express shipping is available to many destinations at extra cost; ask before you order. A tracking number is emailed as soon as the order leaves the warehouse, and you can follow it from your account.

In most cases, no. International orders ship DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) wherever our carriers support it, so duties and import taxes are prepaid by Windlass Central and any applicable tax is shown at checkout rather than collected on your doorstep. If DDP isn’t available for your destination, contact us before ordering and we’ll explain what to expect.

Windlass FAQs: returns, refunds and warranty

Two windows to remember: 7 days for a full refund, 30 days for an exchange or store credit. The windlass FAQs below spell out how each works.

Return an unused product in its original packaging within 7 days of delivery for a full refund (minus applicable fees), or within 30 days for an exchange or store credit. Email us your order number and the reason and we’ll send a return authorisation with shipping instructions; once the item is received and inspected, processing takes up to 7 business days.

Custom-made or special-order products, clearance items, electronic items (unless faulty) and anything installed, modified or used can’t be returned. Full details are on the Refunds and Returns Policy page.

If the item is faulty, was damaged in transit or isn’t what you ordered, we cover the return shipping and put it right. For change-of-mind returns, return shipping is at your cost and a 15% restocking fee may apply. For a damaged delivery, send photos and your order number to hello@windlasscentral.com and we’ll issue a return authorisation straight away.

Every Muir windlass, drum winch and capstan we sell carries Muir Engineering’s manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, and as an authorised dealer we lodge and manage the claim with Muir for you. It covers units that are correctly installed, maintained and used within their ratings, not damage from overloading, incorrect wiring, neglect or modification. Current terms and the claims process are on the Warranty Policy page.

Windlass FAQs: installation, power and support

Muir ships each unit with a manual and a deck template. The electrical side is where most of the windlass FAQs we receive come from.

Many owners handle the mechanical installation: the deck cut-out template, mounting hardware and manual come with every Muir unit. For the electrical side we recommend a marine electrician. A windlass draws high current under load, so it needs correctly sized cable, a dedicated circuit breaker or isolator, and a solenoid rated for the motor; get those wrong and you’ll see voltage drop, tripped breakers or a burnt-out motor. Send us your planned layout and we’ll check it before you drill the deck.

At minimum: a circuit breaker or isolator sized to the motor, a dual-direction (reversing) solenoid, and a control: foot switches at the bow, a rocker switch panel at the helm or a portable hand pendant. Most owners also add a chain stopper or snubber to take the load off the windlass at anchor. To see how much rode is out from the helm, add an Auto Anchor chain counter or remote.

Yes. We stock genuine Muir replacement motors, solenoids, clutch handles, drum-winch guide rollers and switch kits, and we can order other components from the factory. Send us the model name, the serial number from the data plate if you have it, and a photo of the part, and we’ll confirm the correct replacement before you pay.

Message us on WhatsApp, email hello@windlasscentral.com or use the contact form. For sizing advice, send boat length, anchor weight, chain size and locker depth; for post-installation help, send the model and a photo or short video of the problem. Many product pages also link to Muir’s installation guides and manuals, and if your question isn’t in these windlass FAQs, ask anyway.
