Start with your anchor locker, not the pull rating
Most small-boat windlass guides open with pull ratings. That is the wrong end of the problem. Every unit on this page pulls more than a 25-footer’s ground tackle weighs. What actually goes wrong is the rode: either the locker is too shallow for chain to fall away and the gypsy jams on a pile, or there is no locker at all.
Three questions settle it.
1. Do you have a real anchor locker with at least 12 in (300 mm) of fall?
Fall is the vertical drop from the underside of the gypsy to the top of the piled chain. If the answer is no, or if your “locker” is a shallow moulded tray in the bow of a trailer boat, stop here and buy a drum winch. Muir rates the DW 06 for boats up to 7 m (23 ft) and the DW 08 up to 8 m (26 ft).
2. Do you have 16 in (406 mm) of fall, and want the clean foredeck?
Then a vertical windlass fits. The Storm VR600 puts the motor and gearbox below deck, so all you see topside is the gypsy. Muir rates it to 9 m (30 ft), which makes it the only unit here that reaches into small-cruiser territory. It sits just 2.3 in (58 mm) proud of the deck, but needs 6.8 in (173 mm) of clear space below it. The Storm VFF600 is the same machine with free-fall, at $2,015.
3. Shallow locker, but you want conventional rope and chain?
A horizontal windlass needs only about 12 in (300 mm) of fall, because the gypsy sits above deck and the chain turns through 90 degrees rather than dropping straight down. This is where the Lewmar Pro-Sport 550 lives, and it is a genuinely good unit for 20–30 ft boats. We do not sell it. We are telling you about it anyway, because if that is your boat and your budget, you should know it exists.

Why we lead with working load
Almost every windlass listing on the internet leads with maximum pull, because it is the bigger number. It is also the softer one. In Muir’s own engineering data, max pull is defined as three times the working load. It is calculated from the working figure, never measured separately. Most manufacturers do something similar and none of them say so.
Working load is what the winch actually does, continuously, while you retrieve an anchor. It is the number to size on. Max pull is the short burst available to break an anchor out of mud, and you should not be using it routinely.
Standard or Combo: what is actually in the box
This trips up more buyers than any spec on the page. The drum winches come two ways.
A Standard package is the winch plus its electrics: circuit breaker and mounting panel, rocker switch, reversing solenoid kit, deck mounting studs and fasteners, and the installation booklet. No rope. No chain.
A Combo package is the same unit with a spliced rope-and-chain rode included. The DW 06 Combo is $1,377.50 against $1,106.75 for the Standard, so the rode adds about $271. The DW 08 Combo is $1,510.50 against $1,268.25.
If you already own rope and chain in the right sizes, buy Standard. If you are starting from nothing, Combo is cheaper than buying the winch and a rope-chain kit separately.
Why a drum winch changes the math on a trailer boat
A drum winch stores the entire rode on the drum itself. There is no gravity feed, no fall requirement, and nothing to pile up. On a trailer boat, or any sub-25 ft hull where the anchor locker is really a shallow tray, the problem simply stops existing. This is the whole reason drum winches are standard fit in Australia and rare in the US.
DW 08. Power down, power up. $1,268.25
DFF 08. Mechanical free-fall. $1,631.44Muir markets the DW range as suited to boats with no anchor rode storage at all. Savwinch claims deployment over 100 m/min. Lone Star’s marketing goes after windlasses directly as jam-prone with short life cycles. All of that is manufacturer marketing, and none of it has independent test data behind it. What we can tell you is the mechanism, and the mechanism is real: no locker feed means no locker feed problems.
The honest downsides
- A drum can spool unevenly if you retrieve without keeping tension on the rode. You have to guide it, at least at first.
- Rope-chain rode only. You cannot run an all-chain rode on a drum.
- Less continuous grunt than a vertical of similar price. The DW 08 works at 132 lb; the Storm VR600 works at 271 lb for $319 more.
- It costs more than a basic conventional windlass. A Pro-Sport 550 undercuts a DW 06.
- The DW 06 is 12 V only, and it is not Auto Anchor compatible. The DW 08 and DFF 08 are both.
Where the drum argument does get sharp is against other drums. The established US-sold Australian drum winch is Lone Star, at $1,689 for the GX1 and $2,009 for the GX2. The Muir DW 06 and DW 08 land at $1,106.75 and $1,268.25, with a three-year warranty. That is $400 to $740 less for the same category of product.
How much pull do you actually need?
Lewmar’s rule is that a windlass should be rated to at least four times the weight of your total ground tackle. Work it through for a typical 22-footer:
The smallest unit on this page, the DW 06, has a max pull of 265 lb and a working load of 88 lb. It clears the rule on max pull with more than double the margin, and its continuous working load still carries nearly three times the tackle weight.
Which is the point. Pull rating is not your constraint on a small boat. Locker geometry and rode capacity are. Size on those, confirm pull second, and you will not buy the wrong winch.
Fitting it, and using it safely
- The windlass is not a cleat. Once the anchor is set, transfer the load to a chain stopper or a snubber. A windlass gearbox is built to lift, not to hold a boat against a swell all night.
- Break the anchor out with the engine, not the motor. Motor up over the anchor, take up slack as you go, and let the hull’s buoyancy do the breaking. The gap between working load and max pull is there for a reason.
- Isolate the breaker when you are underway. A knocked switch at speed will run the anchor out.
- Secure the anchor for the road, too. Trailer boats lose anchors on the highway more often than at sea. Strap or pin it separately from the winch.
Frequently asked questions
Which model do I need for my boat length?
Up to 23 ft (7 m) with no real locker: DW 06. Up to 26 ft (8 m): DW 08, or DFF 08 if you want free-fall. Up to 30 ft (9 m) with 16 in (406 mm) of locker fall and a preference for a clean foredeck: Storm VR600. Do not stretch the DW 08 past 26 ft; the DW 10 is rated to 33 ft and works at 192 lb.
What rope and chain comes with it?
Nothing, if you buy a Standard package. The Combo packages include a spliced rode, and the same rodes are sold separately as drum winch rope-chain kits from $123:
- DW 06: 164 ft (50 m) of 6 mm (1/4 in) nylon spliced to 16 ft (5 m) of 6 mm chain
- DW/DFF 08: either 328 ft (100 m) of 6 mm rope, or 262 ft (80 m) of 8 mm (5/16 in) rope, both spliced to 16 ft (5 m) of 6 mm chain
Rope is nylon 3-strand. Chain is Muir G50 hot-dipped galvanized high-test.
Do I need 12 V or 24 V?
Pick one when you order, and match your boat’s existing system. The DW 06 is 12 V only. The DW 08, DFF 08, VR600 and VFF600 are each built either 12 V or 24 V. These are built to order, so the choice is not reversible afterwards.
Will it fit under my deck?
For the drum winches, nothing goes below deck at all. The whole machine bolts to the foredeck, so the only question is footprint:
- DW 06: drum 8.3 in (210 mm) across the flanges, 5.9 in (150 mm) wide, about 12.6 in (321 mm) tall overall
- DW 08: drum 9.6 in (245 mm) across, 5.9 in (150 mm) wide, about 14.9 in (378 mm) tall and 14.0 in (355 mm) wide including the motor
- DFF 08: drum 9.6 in (245 mm) across, 5.9 in (150 mm) wide, about 13.9 in (352 mm) tall, on six 11 mm mounting holes
The vertical VR600 is the one that needs planning, because half of it lives below deck. Above deck it is low, only 2.3 in (58 mm) tall with a 3.8 in (96 mm) topworks. Below deck you need 6.8 in (173 mm) of depth and 9.2 in (233 mm) of width for the motor and gearbox, and that is on top of the 16 in (406 mm) of locker fall the chain needs. The chain pipe is 1.9 in (48 mm). The VRC600, which adds a capstan, stands 5.5 in (140 mm) above deck instead.

Is it turn-key, or do I need a wiring kit?
Closer to turn-key than most people expect. Every package here already includes the circuit breaker and mounting panel, the rocker switch, the reversing solenoid kit and the deck mounting hardware. What is not included is the battery cable, because the gauge depends on your run length, and that is boat-specific. The supplied breaker is 80 A across all five models, at 12 V or 24 V. If you would rather add a spare set or upgrade the helm controls, the circuit breaker and deck switch kits are sold separately.
Can I use the chain I already have?
On a drum winch the question does not arise: the rode is spliced rope with a short chain leader, and there is no gypsy to match.
On the VR600 and VFF600 it matters, and this is where US buyers usually get caught. Metric DIN 766 and US 1/4 in G4 are close in size but different in pitch, and a gypsy cut for one will skip and jam on the other. The 600 covers both, across two gypsy patterns: 6 mm Australian short-link and 6 mm DIN 766 share one, while 7 mm DIN 766, 1/4 in BBB and 1/4 in G4 high-test share the other.
