One measurement decides this, and it is not your boat length. Drop a tape into your anchor locker and measure the fall: the vertical drop from under the deck to the top of the piled chain.

The measurement that decides it

Fall is the vertical drop from the underside of the gypsy to the top of the chain once it has piled up in the locker. Chain needs somewhere to fall away to. If it does not have that room it stacks into a cone, reaches the gypsy, and the windlass jams.

Measure this before you shop. It rules out one format for a great many boats, and it is the single most common reason a windlass never works properly after installation.

A vertical windlass wants 16 in (406 mm) of fall. A horizontal needs about 12 in (300 mm), because the gypsy sits above deck and the chain turns through 90 degrees instead of dropping straight down. If you have neither, that is not a failure of measurement. It is the answer, and the answer is a drum winch.

What a vertical windlass is

The motor and gearbox mount below deck. Above deck you see the gypsy, and on the VRC models a capstan drum for warping lines.

The chain wraps roughly 180 degrees around the gypsy before dropping into the locker. That wrap is the whole engineering argument for the format: more contact means more grip, and less chance of the chain slipping under load.

The costs are real. You need the locker depth, you need room below deck for the motor, and the motor then lives in a damp space where access is awkward. On the Storm VR600, Muir specifies 6.8 in (173 mm) of depth and 9.2 in (233 mm) of width below deck for the motor and gearbox, on top of the fall the chain needs. That width catches people out more often than the depth does. We have tabulated both figures for every model in will it fit.

Above deck a vertical is barely there. Below it, the motor lies across the hull, so the beam under your foredeck matters as much as the drop.

What a horizontal windlass is

Motor and gearbox sit above deck, so the entire unit is visible and reachable. The chain makes about a 90 degree turn over the gypsy and drops through the chain pipe.

  • Works in a shallow locker, which is what saves the job on many boats.
  • Simplest installation. You cut for the chain pipe, wiring and mounting bolts, and nothing else.
  • Everything is on deck, so servicing is straightforward.

In exchange you give up grip, because that 90 degree wrap holds the chain less firmly. The unit occupies deck space and takes weather and foot traffic. It also has to line up accurately with the bow roller, because the rode must lead straight onto the gypsy rather than at an angle.

Format does not set the price

It is tempting to assume one format costs more. It does not work out that neatly.

At the small end the vertical is cheaper: the Storm VR600 and the HR650 Lynx both work at 271 lb (123 kg), and the vertical costs $91.75 less. In the middle it flips: the HR950 Lynx works slightly harder than the Storm VR850 and costs $175.75 less. At the top it flips back, with the HR1600 Cougar at $674.90 more than the Storm VR1250 for identical pull.

What about drum winches

Vertical and horizontal are not the only options, and on a lot of smaller boats they are not the right ones.

A windlass is a feed device that relies on gravity and locker space. A drum winch stores the whole rode on itself, which removes the constraint rather than working around it.

A drum winch has no gypsy. The rope and chain rode winds onto the drum, so there is no chain to match, no locker to feed and no fall to measure. On a trailer boat where the locker is a moulded tray, that is not a compromise. It is the only format that actually fits.

The trade-offs: it takes a rope rode with a chain leader rather than all chain, the rode has to spool evenly so it wants a guide roller and some attention early on, and the drum occupies its own space on the bow. The range runs from the DW 06 at $1,106.75 for boats to 23 ft, through the DW 08 at $1,268.25, to the DW 10 at $1,800.25 for boats to 33 ft. Choosing, in order

Work through it in this sequence and the decision makes itself.

  • Measure the fall. Under 12 in and you want a drum winch. Between 12 and 16 in, horizontal. Over 16 in, either format is open to you.
  • Check below deck. A vertical needs clear space under the deck for the motor, roughly 6.8 in deep and 9.2 in wide on the 600. Measure the width, not just the depth.
  • Look at your bow roller. If it is off centre, or you run twin rollers, a vertical handles the feed angle. A horizontal has to line up straight.
  • Then size it. Lewmar’s rule is a windlass rated to at least four times the weight of your anchor, chain and rode combined. On most boats under 40 ft this is not the binding constraint. Locker geometry is.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Sizing on boat length instead of ground tackle. Two 35-footers can need different winches if one runs all chain and the other runs rope with a chain leader.
  • Choosing the format before measuring the locker. This is the expensive one, because you usually discover it after the deck is cut.
  • Mismatching the gypsy to the chain. Size alone is not enough. Metric DIN 766 and US G4 differ in pitch, and a gypsy cut for one will skip on the other.
  • Forgetting the cable. Undersized cable drops voltage, the motor works harder to compensate, and it runs hot. Size it to the run length, not to the breaker.
  • Using the windlass as a cleat. Once the anchor is set, the load belongs on a chain stopper or a snubber.

Frequently asked questions

Is a vertical windlass better than a horizontal?

Neither is better in the abstract. A vertical grips the chain harder and leaves a cleaner deck, but needs a deeper locker and below-deck space. A horizontal fits shallow lockers and is far easier to install and service. Your anchor locker decides which of those matters.

Which is easier to install?

Horizontal, clearly. The motor and gearbox stay above deck, so you avoid the below-deck work a vertical needs. If you are fitting it yourself rather than paying a yard, that difference is significant.

How do I know which will fit my boat?

Measure the fall in your anchor locker. Under 12 in (300 mm) rules out both gypsy formats. Between 12 and 16 in, horizontal. Over 16 in (406 mm), check you also have room below deck for a vertical’s motor. Every product page carries a downloadable deck template under the Downloads tab.

Can I replace a horizontal windlass with a vertical one?

Sometimes, but check two things first: whether the locker has 16 in (406 mm) of fall, and whether there is clear space below deck for the motor. Going the other way, horizontal to vertical is rarely a problem, since a horizontal asks less of the locker.

Does a vertical really grip better?

Yes, and the reason is geometry rather than marketing. The chain wraps about 180 degrees around a vertical gypsy against roughly 90 degrees on a horizontal. More contact means more friction and less chance of slipping when the load comes on.

What size windlass do I need?

Can one windlass serve twin bow rollers?

A vertical can, because it accepts the rode across a wide feed angle. A horizontal generally cannot, since it has to line up straight with a single roller.
