Top 5 Windlass Problems and How to Fix Them
The 30-second answer

Most windlass failures are electrical, and most of the rest are one small mechanical part. Diagnose in circuit order: breaker, switch, solenoid, motor, then the metal. The fix is usually a $13.72 spring or a $49.00 switch, not a new winch.

Half of all “running but not pulling” calls end with this. It tightens the clutch, and it is the part that goes overboard.

A windlass is a simple machine: a battery, a switch, a relay, a motor and a wheel. That is good news, because a simple machine can be diagnosed in order, and the order is the circuit.

The five problems below follow this line from left to right. Whatever your symptom, start at the breaker end, because each check that passes clears everything before it.

1. Nothing happens when you press the switch

Before anything else: is the isolator on, and is the battery actually charged? A rested 12 V battery should read about 12.6 V. Ten minutes of checks here saves an afternoon of pulling panels apart.

Then follow the circuit.

  • The breaker will not stay in, or trips immediately. The fault is the breaker itself or the cable run behind it. Look for green corrosion at the terminals and chafe where cable passes through bulkheads. A replacement breaker and isolator panel is from $59.00.
  • Breaker in, but no click from the solenoid when you press. Test the switch before the solenoid: it is the cheaper part, it lives in the weather, and it fails far more often. A rocker switch with panel is $49.00; foot switches are from $29.00. If the switch tests fine, the solenoid is from $195.00.
  • Solenoid clicks, motor stays silent. Now it is the motor, but prove it first: measure voltage at the motor terminals while someone presses the switch. Full voltage and no movement condemns the motor. No voltage means a cable or solenoid contact problem, and the motor is innocent.

That last test matters because motors get replaced for crimes committed by ten dollars of corroded terminal. Clean and grease every connection in the run before you spend real money.

2. The motor runs but the chain does not move

The drive is not reaching the gypsy, and the usual reason costs nothing to fix.

Tighten the clutch. The clutch is a friction cone between the shaft and the gypsy, and it loosens in service. Fit the clutch handle and take it up firmly. If the handle went overboard some time ago, which is where clutch handles go, a replacement is from $28.00.

If the clutch is tight and the gypsy still slips under load, the chain and gypsy no longer agree with each other. Either the chain was replaced at some point with a different standard, or the gypsy pockets have worn round. 3. It pulls, but slowly

A slow windlass is almost never a tired motor. It is a hungry one.

The motor sits at the far end of the longest DC run on the boat. Every connection between it and the battery is a chance to lose voltage.
  • Battery under load. A battery can read 12.6 V at rest and collapse the moment the winch asks for current. Watch the voltage while the windlass pulls; if it sags hard, the battery is done or too small.
  • Voltage drop in the cable. Undersized or aging cable starves the motor, the motor pulls more current to compensate, and it runs hot. Size cable to the round trip from battery to winch and back, not to the breaker rating.
  • Connections. Every lug, terminal and joint in the run adds resistance as it corrodes. Clean, tighten, grease.

And check the technique before the electrics: if the boat is not motoring gently up toward the anchor while you recover, the winch is dragging the whole boat. No windlass is sized for that.

4. The chain jams, piles up, or will not drop

Feeding chain cleanly off the wheel and into the locker is the job of three small parts, and they wear in a known order.

Chain rides round the wheel instead of dropping? That is the stripper. Chain skips out of its pockets? That is the finger and spring.
  • The stripper peels each link off the gypsy so it can fall. Worn or bent, the chain follows the wheel round and jams. On a Storm 850 it is $24.07.
  • The finger and spring hold each link seated in its pocket as it wraps. A tired spring is $13.72, and the finger itself $79.34.
  • The gypsy wears last and costs most. Check it after the other two, not before.

If the chain drops fine but piles into a cone that jams the pipe from below, that is not a fault in the winch at all. The locker is shallow for the amount of chain you carry. Knock the cone down when you finish recovering, or read our installation guide on locker fall before the next boat.

One more, for rope-and-chain rodes: if it always snags at the same place, inspect the splice. A worn or stiffened rope-to-chain splice will not run through a gypsy, and a re-splice is cheaper than any part on this page.

5. It stops halfway up

A windlass that quits mid-lift and comes back after a rest is telling you something specific: the breaker tripped on load, or the motor’s thermal protection let go. Both are protection doing its job. The question is why the load was that high.

  • You are winching the boat to the anchor. The commonest cause. Motor up as you recover and let the winch lift only chain.
  • The anchor is fouled or the chain is snagged. No winch wins that fight. Cleat off, motor over the anchor, and break it out with the hull.
  • It happens on every single lift. The winch is undersized for your ground tackle. That is a sizing problem, not a repair problem: work the numbers in our buyer’s guide.

Do not fit a bigger breaker to stop the tripping. The breaker is sized to protect the cable and the motor, and defeating it converts a nuisance into a fire risk. If you are not sure the cable is right for the breaker you have, our wiring guide has Muir’s cable sizes by model and run length.

The habits that prevent all five

  • Rinse with fresh water after every salty trip. Salt crystals are what eat the switch, the terminals and the springs.
  • Run the winch monthly, even out of season. Solenoid contacts and clutch cones both prefer use to storage.
  • Grease the electrical connections once a season, and look at the cable run while you are there.
  • Glance at the stripper and finger once a year. They are consumables, priced like consumables.
  • Never leave the boat hanging on the winch. A $67.00 snubber or a chain stopper takes the load the gearbox was never built to hold. Most of the dead gearboxes we see died of this, slowly.

Frequently asked questions

My windlass clicks but the motor does not turn

The click means the switch and solenoid coil are alive, so the fault is past them: burned solenoid contacts, a corroded motor connection, or the motor itself. Measure voltage at the motor terminals during a press. Full voltage, no movement: motor. Low or nothing: contacts or cable.

Why does it trip the breaker every time I use it?

Either the winch is working far too hard, which is a technique or sizing problem, or there is a short or a seized motor drawing stall current. If it trips even lifting slack chain, stop using it and find the electrical fault. Do not fit a bigger breaker.

The chain skips on the gypsy

Chain and gypsy no longer match. Either the pockets have worn, or the chain is a different standard from what the gypsy was cut for. Metric DIN 766 and US G4 differ in pitch at the same nominal size. Check the gypsy stamp against your chain’s certificate before replacing anything.

Can I still get parts for an older Muir windlass?

Repair or replace?

Add up the parts. One solenoid or one stripper is a repair. A seized motor plus a worn gypsy on a thirty-year-old winch is most of the price of a new one, and the new one carries a warranty. If the deck cutout and chain match, replacement is less work than it sounds.

How often should a windlass be serviced?

A freshwater rinse every trip, connections and a visual check each season, and a proper look at the gearbox oil and wearing parts annually. An hour a year, and it is the difference between owning a windlass and owning this article’s problem list.
