The 30-second answer

A windlass drops your chain into an anchor locker and needs the room to do it. A drum winch carries the whole rode wound on itself and needs no locker at all. So the question is not which is better. It is whether your boat has a locker.

The question that settles it

Go to your bow and open the anchor locker. Measure straight down from the underside of the deck to where the chain would pile up. That number is the fall, and it decides the format before you look at a single model.

Under 12 in (300 mm) and no windlass will work properly for long. The chain stacks into a cone, the cone reaches the gypsy, and the machine jams with your anchor half up. A drum winch is the only format that sidesteps this, because it never asks the boat for storage space.

A windlass is a feed device that depends on gravity and locker space. A drum winch stores the rode on itself, which removes the constraint rather than working around it.

Plenty of trailer boats, centre consoles and RIBs have a moulded tray in the bow that looks like an anchor locker but holds nothing. Owners of those boats spend months comparing windlasses before finding out that none of them fit. Measuring first saves that.

What a windlass does

A windlass is built around a gypsy: a toothed wheel cut to the exact pitch of one chain size. The teeth engage the links positively, so the chain cannot slip. Pull the up switch and the gypsy hauls the chain in over the bow roller, then lets it drop through a pipe into the locker below.

Gravity does the storing. That is the elegance of the design and also its one condition, because gravity needs somewhere to put the chain.

Horizontal windlasses need about 12 in (300 mm) of fall. Verticals want 16 in (406 mm), because the chain drops straight down instead of turning through 90 degrees first.

What you get in return is real. All-chain rode becomes possible, which is what you want for abrasion over rock and coral and for the catenary that keeps the pull on your anchor horizontal. The gypsy holds a loaded chain more securely than any friction drive. And the rode disappears below deck, out of the weather and out of the way.

The formats split from there. A vertical puts the motor below deck and shows you only the gypsy. A horizontal keeps everything on top and fits a shallower locker. We have worked that choice through in detail in vertical vs horizontal windlass.

What a drum winch does

A drum winch has no gypsy and no chain pipe. It is a powered reel: a stainless drum between two flanges, driven through a worm gearbox, bolted to the deck. The rode winds onto the drum in layers, the way an extension cord winds onto a reel.

Because the machine carries its own storage, the boat does not have to provide any. There is no locker to fill, no fall to measure, no chain pipe to cut, and no chain standard to match. On a boat with a flat foredeck and nothing usable beneath it, that is the difference between an anchoring system and a bare bow roller.

The rode is rope with a chain leader. On a DW 06 Combo Package that means 5 m of 6 mm chain on the drum with room for about 50 m of 6 mm rope. The chain gives you weight at the anchor end where it does the work and takes the abrasion on the bottom, while the rope keeps the whole assembly light enough to sit on a small bow.

Prices are for the Standard package, which is the winch and its electrics without a rode. Combo packages add a spliced rope and chain rode for roughly $242 to $271 more.

Where a drum winch is the wrong answer

We sell the drum range, so here is what it cannot do.

It will not run all chain. The drum grips by friction between wound layers, and a full drum of chain is both too heavy and too poorly behaved for that. If you anchor over coral or rock often enough that you want chain the whole way, you want a gypsy.

The rode has to go on under tension. Fed in slack, rope heaps against one flange, climbs the rim and fouls. It is easy to avoid once you know, and a light hand on the line as it comes in is usually enough. A guide roller from $42.00 takes the job off you entirely.

Capacity is fixed. A locker can be stuffed with more chain if you decide to carry more. A drum holds what it holds, and on the DW 06 that is around 165 ft of rope behind 16 ft of chain. For most trailer boats in 30 to 60 ft of water that is generous. For anchoring deep, it is a hard ceiling.

It lives on the bow in plain sight. A vertical windlass shows about 2.3 in of polished stainless and hides the rest. A drum winch is all there, in the weather and in the way of anyone working the foredeck.

What each one costs

Drum winches have a reputation in the US for being expensive, and against most of what is sold here it is deserved. Lone Star Marine, the best-known drum brand in this market, lists the GX1 at $1,689.00 and the GX2 at $2,009.00.

Against those, the Muir DW 06 at $1,106.75 and DW 08 at $1,268.25 land $421 to $582 under the cheapest comparable Lone Star, with a 3-year warranty and duties already included in the price. That gap is the main reason we stock the range.

The comparison that goes the other way

If your boat does have a locker, a windlass is usually the cheaper route. US discounters list the Lewmar V700 kit around $1,032, which undercuts every drum winch here including our own entry model.

A drum winch is good value against other drum winches. It is not the cheap option in absolute terms, and if you have the locker depth for a basic gypsy windlass, you will spend less on one.

Above these the range keeps going. The DW 12 takes boats to 39 ft on a 229 lb (104 kg) working load, at $2,778.75. The DW 15 reaches 46 ft and 287 lb (130 kg), at $3,301.25. Both are commercial-weight machines, and the DW 15 trades speed for pull: it recovers at 82 ft/min where everything below it manages 108. Every package, Standard or Combo, arrives with the circuit breaker and mounting panel, the helm rocker switch, the reversing solenoid kit and the deck fasteners. Battery cable is the only thing you supply. The Combo adds the spliced rope and chain rode, and you can buy that separately later as a rope and chain kit from $123.00 if you would rather start with the Standard.

Deciding, in order

  • Measure the fall in your locker. Under 12 in (300 mm), buy a drum winch. Between 12 and 16 in, a horizontal windlass. Over 16 in (406 mm), either windlass format is open to you.
  • Decide what rode you want. Committed to all chain, you need a gypsy, which means you need the locker. Happy with rope and a chain leader, the drum is back on the table whatever your locker looks like.
  • Check the deck you are bolting to. A drum winch puts its whole load into a small bolt pattern on the foredeck. Backing plates are not optional, and our installation guide covers what to look for.
  • Then size it. Lewmar’s rule of thumb is a machine rated to at least four times the combined weight of anchor, chain and rode. On boats where a drum winch is in the running, the deck and the rode decide it long before the pull rating does.

Frequently asked questions

Is a drum winch the same as a windlass?

No. A windlass hauls chain over a toothed gypsy and drops it into a locker. A drum winch winds the whole rode onto a reel and stores it there. They solve the same problem with opposite approaches to where the rode goes.

Can a drum winch handle all-chain rode?

No, and this is the real limit of the format. A drum grips by friction between its wound layers, which suits rope with a chain leader. If you want chain all the way to the anchor, buy a windlass with a gypsy cut for your chain.

Do I need an anchor locker for a drum winch?

No. That is the whole point of the format. The rode lives on the drum, so a moulded tray with no depth, or no locker at all, stops being a problem.

Are drum winches good for small boats?

They suit them better than anything else. Trailer boats, centre consoles and RIBs rarely have the fall depth a gypsy windlass needs, and the DW 06 covers boats to 23 ft while the DW 08 reaches 26 ft. Our small-boat guide compares both against the vertical option.

Why is my drum winch rope bunching up on one side?

It went on slack. Rope needs a little tension to lie in flat layers, and without it the coils heap against one flange until they climb the rim. Keep light pressure on the line as it comes in, or fit a guide roller to do it for you.

How much does a drum winch cost?

Is a drum winch harder to install than a windlass?

It is easier. There is no chain pipe to cut and nothing goes below deck, so the job is a bolt pattern, backing plates and a cable run. A vertical windlass, by comparison, needs a hole for the motor and clear space beneath the deck for it to occupy.
